Spotlight on Ethiopia

Our new crop Ethiopian coffees have finally landed after some hefty delays at port. See our fresh natural Yirgacheffee, Kochere and Guji offerings alongside.

  • Coffee drying at Aricha station on African raised beds

    Rachia

    Ethiopia

    papaya
    blackberry jube
    lemongrass

After a first buying coffee from the Aricha in 2021, we see a return with this new lot Rachia. Expect familiar sensations of macerated berry & apricot with layers of complex candy sweetness, and a soft clove/spice finish.

  • Fresh cherry on raised African beds in Buku Sayisa, next to dry fermenting cherry.

    Sayisa

    Ethiopia

    blackcurrant
    grape bubblegum
    orange soda

Sayisa is a lot produced by the Buku Sayisa mill at extreme altitude. Expect all the classic Guji dark berry characters, lifted by a playful almost-carbonated acidity and candy-like florals.

  • View of the hills in Uraga from Bisrat Melaku's wet mill.

    Bitoya

    Ethiopia

    brambleberry
    apricot compote
    rock candy

This Bitoya lot is produced by 650-800 smallholders and processed slowly at Bisrat Melaku’s wet mill in Uraga. Expect hard candy sweetness and mouthfeel, with complex wild berries, and cooked stonefruit.

Liquidambar coffee, fruit and blossom
  • Looking uphill at Nyamasheke CWS, Lake Kivu, Rwanda

    Viva

    Rwanda

    honey
    black grape
    elderflower

This is a classic Western Province washed Bourbon; this extra syrupy coffee is as sweet as honey, with some delicate florals to finish.

  • Unripe, green voffee cherry growing in Minas de Mantiqueria, Brazil.

    Bela Vista

    Brazil

    black forest cake
    mandarin
    candy floss

This is our second year buying this Anaerobic processed Yellow Catucai; expect big complex sugary sweetness with a touch of bright citrus and pineapple candy.

  • House in the distance on a hill in Gigante, Huila Department in Colombia

    El Desarrollo

    Colombia

    toffee apple
    blackberry
    apricot jam

This mixed Caturra/Colombia lot provides intense body and sweetness; malt & toffee, with refreshing apple & berry acidity, which makes for a juicy black coffee, while providing intense sweetness when roasted darker as the backbone of our Strider blend.

  • Santo Antonio Estate, natural coffee drying on patios

    Santo Antonio

    Brazil

    dark caramel
    cola nut
    redcurrant

This pulped natural Yellow Catucai really challenged our expectations on the kinds of cleanliness you can get from Brazil. With all the texture and sweetness of a traditional natural, we have a less dominant body and cleaner acid profile in the cup, dark caramel & toffee opens to red fruit and cooked peach.

  • Honey & Natural processed coffee drying at Karambo CWS in Muyinga District, Burundi

    Karira Hill

    Burundi

    nougat
    rose geranium
    lemon sorbet

This is our second lot from the Karambo CWS, Red Bourbon varietal but processed as an anaerobic natural. We love the sweet aroma of this coffee, the jammy and floral Bourbon characters, mixture of fruit esters, and bright citric & tartaric acid.

  • Fazenda Bom Jesus in Alta Mogiana from the air

    Bom Jesus Microlot

    Brazil

    hazelnut praline
    blackberry
    rock candy

Bom Jesus is regularly awarded in local and national competitions as one of the best coffees from the Alta Mogiana region, and this is a rare microlot of a single cultivar Yellow Catucai. We love the complex candy sweetness; the cleanliness in the cup belies the traditional natural processing, so the juicy berry acidity and lingering aftertaste make for an excellent black coffee.
